About the author

Hildebrand is the pseudonym of Nicolaas Beets, author, poet and minister. His most famous work, the 'Camera Obscura', was first published in 1839. Beets was born in Haarlem on September 13, 1814. He studied theology in Leiden and earned his doctorate in 1839. From 1840 to 1853 he was a minister in Heemstede, then in Utrecht. From 1874 to 1884 he was a professor of theology in Utrecht. He died there on March 13, 1903.
