Marie, a nurse on the island of Mayotte, adopts an abandoned baby whom she names Moise. He grows up as a French boy but struggles with his outsider status and his origins. After Marie's death, Moise ends up in the largest, most notorious slum of Mayotte, called "Gaza". The story is told from five different perspectives and explores themes such as loss of youth, violence, immigration, identity, poverty, and isolation in this French department in the Indian Ocean.
