The term 'tirocinium' originally means the first period of military service or recruit training, and here serves as a symbol for the learning time required to build a solid foundation in Latin. Just as a young soldier ('tiro') goes through a training phase before he can do the real work, the learner in this method progresses through an exercise stage.
After completing more than fifty exercises, the learner finishes a basic training course, after which the focus shifts to understanding and translating authentic Latin texts.
