With Utopia (1516), Thomas More introduced a new concept of ideal societies, as a critical reflection on reality. This edition includes Ralph Robinson’s translation from 1556, supplemented with historical letters and illustrations.
In addition to Utopia, two other early modern visions of other worlds are presented here. Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis (1627) depicts a future in which science is central to society. Henry Neville’s The Isle of Pines (1668) addresses themes such as colonialism, race, and sexuality and serves as a precursor to Robinson Crusoe. Together, these works show the diversity and purpose of early modern utopian literature.
