"The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett is a magical novel for both adults and children. "I have stolen a garden," she said quickly. "It's not mine. It's nobody's. Nobody wants it, nobody cares, nobody ever goes there. Perhaps everything is dead there already; I don't know." After losing her parents, young Mary Lennox is sent from India to live with her uncle in a gloomy manor house on the wild English heaths. She feels lonely and has no one to play with, but one day she learns of a secret garden somewhere on the estate that no one is allowed to enter. Then Mary discovers an old key in a flowerbed—and a wave of magic leads her to the hidden door. Slowly, she turns the key and enters a world she could never have imagined. With an introduction by Sophie Dahl.
