In December 1141, priest Ailnoth arrives among the parishioners of Foregate, just outside the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. He brings a housekeeper and her nephew, but his strict character leads to tragedy.
Brother Cadfael discovers that Ailnoth is a harsh man, while Benet, the nephew and an assistant in Cadfael's herb garden, turns out to be a deceiver. When Ailnoth is found drowned, suspicion falls on Benet, but many had motives.
