For a long time, economic research on Africa was seen as intellectually and professionally unattractive. Leading researchers in top institutions rarely chose to specialize in this area, partly due to the well-known limitations of economic data on the continent. Additionally, development economics was not always popular within the broader field, which also struggled with an identity crisis after failing to predict the Great Recession.
The situation has changed. Numerous leading researchers, including several Nobel laureates, now take Africa and economics seriously and apply their expertise to it. This has led to new insights: the wealth, complexity, and diversity of African societies have brought renewal to the humanities and social sciences, and particularly economics. Africa has thus grown into an important intellectual focal point for researchers worldwide.
This handbook (the first of two volumes) collects authoritative contributions on economic science and concepts within the African context. It offers a broad and varied perspective on thinking about Africa and the continent's contributions to the economic discipline. The editorial team consists of internationally recognized economists, supplemented with perspectives from philosophers, political scientists, and anthropologists.
