Historical context:
In December 1953, the French army in Vietnam challenged the Vietnamese army to a decisive confrontation. French paratroopers landed in the jungle near the border with Laos, but were quickly surrounded by the Vietnamese in Dien Bien Phu.
The course of the battle:
- The French troops changed from hunters to the hunted
- They defended their weak base in the jungle
- The siege continued and led to French exhaustion and eventual destruction
Consequences:
After the French withdrawal, the country was divided under pressure from the US. This led to the establishment of the Republic of South Vietnam, where 55,000 Americans would fall in the coming twenty years.
