Twelve-year-old Amir in independent Afghanistan of 1975 is determined to win the local kite-fighting tournament, with the unwavering support of his friend Hassan. However, an unexpected event that afternoon devastates their lives. As the Russian invasion forces Amir's family to seek refuge in America, Amir realizes he must return to a Taliban-controlled Afghanistan to find the redemption that his new life cannot provide.
