A gripping story about New York at the beginning of the twentieth century
In early twentieth-century New York, before World War I, corruption and crime reigned, especially on the Lower East Side. Here, Eastern European Jews established a network of crime syndicates, with gangs of horse poisoners, casino owners, pimps, and thieves vying for power. Meanwhile, their family members worked in the unregulated textile industry.
After a notorious murder of a gambler, wealthy German-Jewish residents from uptown took matters into their own hands. Out of concern for immigration policy and the future of Jewish Americans, they established a secret vice unit, led by a driven young man.
This unit, known as the Incorruptibles, combated undermining forms of crime. However, their activities led to the rise of a new class of crooks who exploited the growing reform movements to expand their power.
