Jack Kerouac in 1944
The year 1944 was a turbulent and pivotal year for Jack Kerouac. In March, he lost his good friend Sebastian Sampas, who was killed as a military medical orderly at Anzio. This loss brought much grief with it.
In the spring, Kerouac strengthened his bond with Lucien Carr, William Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg and became actively involved in the vibrant bohemian culture of New York.
In August, Carr stabbed David Kammerer, who, according to his own account, was harassing him. Kerouac was initially arrested as an accomplice because he had helped hide the weapon and Kammerer's glasses. He was imprisoned, but married his first wife, Edie Parker, on August 22 to be able to pay the bail.
Later, the court dismissed the charge against Kerouac and prosecuted Carr for manslaughter. The final piece of the year was the loss of Kerouac's manuscript The Haunted Life, a coming-of-age story set in his birthplace of Lowell, Massachusetts.
