In The Tale of The Fall of Gondolin the gods are at the center of the conflict between Morgoth’s evil and the power of Ulmo, the second power among the Valar. These mighty contrasts form the backdrop to the fall of the hidden elf-city of Gondolin.
Gondolin, founded by rebellious Noldorin Elves from Valinor, is a turning point in the story of the gods’ struggle and the fall because of its secrecy. While Morgoth prepares his army of Angband to destroy the city, the gods in Valinor largely refuse to intervene against this threat, which heightens the tragedy of the story.
