Gertrude Stein (1874–1946)
Gertrude Stein was an influential American poet, novelist, art collector, and playwright. She organized a famous salon in Paris, where among others F. Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso, and Ernest Hemingway came.
Key Works
Stein was a pioneer of modernism and has inspired many 20th-century writers with her experimental style. Her most famous work is Tender Buttons (1909), a modernist classic with three sections: “Objects”, “Food” and “Rooms”. Other works include Three Lives (1909), White Wines (1913) and An Exercise in Analysis (1917).
