About the book
This richly illustrated book explores the position of the author in Dutch society during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It highlights two centuries of authorship in which ideals and social engagement are central. Betje Wolff and Aagje Deken aimed with their epistolary novels to educate full-fledged citizens, while poet Willem Kloos, a century later, rebelled against that societal role with his famous line 'I am a God in the deepest of my thoughts'.
