The author analyzes the complete series of Robin Hood adventures, starting with the medieval tradition with early poems and long-lived sung ballads. Then two variants are discussed: the Scottish Robin, here called Rabbie Hood, and the emancipated Robin as the exiled Earl of Huntington, together with Lady Marian.
In the nineteenth century, Robin Hood was reinvented as a modern figure, a lover of nature, Marian, England, and the rights of the common man. In novels and films, he developed into an international symbol of freedom, while Marian's role grows within a modern feminist perspective.
