Queer Beirut Sofian Merabet is an ethnographic study of gender and sexual identity in the Middle East, with a focus on the queer community in Beirut. This work combines insights from anthropology, gender and queer studies, as well as urban studies, and offers a fresh perspective on the role of urban space and religion in identity formation.
Between 1995 and 2014, Merabet traveled to Lebanon to conduct interviews with gay men in Beirut. Using their life stories, he examines how gender and sexual identity are shaped within the complex socio-cultural context of a Middle Eastern city. The book also analyzes the concept of “queer space” and the influence of class, sectarianism, colonial history, and religion on these identity- and gender-making processes.
