Story
Hippolyte goes in search of his father Thésée, king of Trézène, who has been missing for months. At the same time, he wants to escape from his stepmother Phèdre, whom he detests, and from Aricie, whom he secretly loves but who belongs to an enemy family.
Conflict
When a messenger announces the death of Thésée, Phèdre confesses her forbidden love to Hippolyte. He rejects her, but Thésée turns out to be alive and will return.
Problems
Guilt feelings and forbidden desires create distance between Thésée, his wife, and son. Phèdre's servant makes a desperate attempt to save her mistress with a lie.
