Phase Transformation in Metals and Alloys, Fourth Edition, written by David A. Porter, is an authoritative textbook on phase transformations in metals. The book provides a well-founded overview of different types of phase changes, with a strong emphasis on practical application in materials science and engineering.

Contents and features

This fourth edition has been updated with recent developments in materials science and engineering. It combines theoretical insights with applied research, strengthened by case studies of engineering alloys. An important aspect is the integration of advanced techniques such as electron microscopy and numerical modeling, including ab initio methods and molecular dynamics.

New in this edition include:

  • Revised figures and text, accounting for 40% and 30% respectively of the material
  • An expanded treatment of ternary phase diagrams, coherency, and interface structures
  • Insights into thermodynamics of grain boundaries and diffusion in multicomponent systems
  • Discussion of diffusionless martensitic transformation, including shape memory and superelasticity
  • Clarification of nucleation, growth, and coarsening processes in precipitation kinetics
