The meaning of history

Woodrow Wilson, originally an academic historian, emphasized the importance of history: "A nation that does not know what it was yesterday does not know what it is today." Wilson and his generation proposed a vision in which America was primarily seen as a land of freedom and courage. However, this history ignored groups such as the brave, the slaves, and the excluded women. As a result, history remained mainly white, male, and Protestant in nature.

Changing perspectives

This one-sided approach led to division. New historiography, often written by radicals and liberals, took a critical stance toward the heroic narrative. This provoked resistance from those who wanted a more celebratory history. In the 1990s, history became a field full of political and emotional conflicts. This culminated in problems surrounding well-known historians such as Michael Bellesiles, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Stephen Ambrose, and Joseph Ellis.

A broader vision

These stories fit into the larger whole of the American historical image. As Flaubert said: "Our ignorance of history causes us to slander our own time." It can be added that history can also be falsified, plagiarized, and politicized.
