Witches were long considered dangerous. They were believed to be able to kill someone with just a look or a word. Some believed they could send their ally, the devil, to you in the form of a dog or cat. It was also believed they could create a clay image of a person and break it, causing the person to die a few weeks later. Although witches are now mainly considered fictional, the fear of them was very much alive in 1612. Young Jennet Device from Lancashire had extensive knowledge of witchcraft, having grown up among the Pendle Witches, who were her family.
