Aphra Behn was an influential English writer, known for her versatile work, including the play The Lucky Chance and the short novel Oroonoko. This book contains six works of fiction ranging from comedy to tragedy and her poetry, in which themes such as identity and self-representation are central. Behn is regarded as a pioneer because she was the first English woman to earn her living by writing.

The collection illustrates why Behn ‘valued fame almost as much as if I had been born a hero’. Her oeuvre, including The Fair Jilt, The History of the Nun and The Unfortunate Bride, offers a wide range of styles and genres. This work is part of the well-known Oxford World's Classics series, which provides reliable, carefully compiled literary texts.
