The New Practical Chinese Reader (NPCR), known as the second generation of the Practical Chinese Reader series, is a comprehensive set of learning materials for adults learning Chinese outside of China. Together, these two generations have had over 30 years of influence in the international Chinese education sector. The third edition focuses on international students and tells engaging stories about their lives and friendships with their Chinese friends and teachers in China. This revision strives to make learning easier for students and easier for teachers by integrating structure, function, and culture. It develops language skills, with a focus on intercultural communication, by teaching grammatical structures, functions, and cultural knowledge, combined with training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Textbook 1 of the New Practical Chinese Reader (3rd edition) consists of two preparatory lessons on phonetics and ten main lessons, and contains rich materials and activities focusing on phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, Chinese characters, and culture.
