This anthology contains three parts: introductory essays on themes such as spatial experience, maps, encounters, and politics; a collection of medieval journeys to diverse destinations, from England to the Far East; and practical bibliographies that illuminate trade, diplomacy, maps, languages, and religious travel. Fourteen texts are presented here for the first time in a modern edition, including works by Chaucer and lesser-known authors such as Osbern Bokenham and Richard Torkington.

Anthony Bale is Professor of Medieval Studies and Deputy Dean at Birkbeck, University of London. He publishes on medieval literature, culture, and religion, with particular attention to relationships between Christians and Jews and the culture of pilgrimage. His research also focuses on travel and pilgrimage between England and the Holy Land in the late Middle Ages.
