Here we once again encounter historical figures such as Billaud, Carnot, Prieur, Couthon, Robespierre, Collot, Barère, Lindet, Saint-Just, and Saint-André. These prominent members of the Comité de salut public played a crucial role in 1794 in establishing the revolutionary government of Year II, which ushered in the infamous period of the Terror. However, the painting that immortalizes them, created by François-Élie Corentin, sometimes called the Tiepolo of the Terror, raises a question: who commissioned this artwork, under what conditions was it created, and for what purpose? With a masterful combination of fact and fiction, Michon brings this historic "revolutionary supper," as Michelet called it, to life. Interestingly, Michelet himself also plays a role in this dramatic story. The book won the Grand Prix du roman from the Académie française in 2009.
