The Overwintering of the Dutch on Nova Zembla

Until the beginning of the twentieth century, generations of schoolchildren were required to read this poem by Hendrik Tollens Cz. (1780-1856). They learned large parts by heart, as if it were a historical truth. However, Tollens shaped the story of Barentsz and Van Heemskerck according to the ideas of his own time.

Content and context

Ruud Poortier brings the poem back to the present day by explaining the literary vision and the historical context around 1819. This creates a better understanding of the early days of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, although it offers less information about the actual overwintering. Poortier earned his PhD in 2014 on the legacy of Hendrik Tollens.
