Between her dark hair and the collar of her cloak, only a fresh, wet neck was visible, which didn't leave me indifferent. After a moment's hesitation, I continued on my way. I hadn't gone fifty meters when I heard the sound—despite the distance, it was overwhelming in the still night—of a body falling into the water. I stopped short, without looking back. Almost immediately afterward, I heard a cry, repeated several times, which also flowed with the river's current, then suddenly ceased.
