In the summer of 1843, James Strang, a young lawyer and atheist, disappeared in a village in New York. Months later, he resurfaced in the American Midwest, where he joined the emerging movement of Mormonism. After the murder of leader Joseph Smith, Strang presented a letter in which he was designated as successor. He convinced hundreds of followers to go with him to an island in Lake Michigan, where he proclaimed himself king.
Life and Influence
From this base, he controlled a quarter of Michigan, established a community with plural marriages, and was involved in theft, corruption, and fraud. Due to conflicts with, among others, the American president, Strang was ultimately murdered, which was major national news.
