Summary
Leela, a twelve-year-old girl, is confronted with the loss of her husband and the associated societal expectations of a widow. She must remove her jewelry and adjust her appearance, which drastically changes her life.
Story
Ba removes the golden and milk glass bangles from her wrists, because as a widow she is not allowed to wear jewelry. Leela is spoiled and unaware of the political unrest in India. After her husband's death, she is seen as a bringer of bad luck and must adhere to strict rules for a year.
Her schoolteacher offers her home lessons, allowing Leela to learn about the changes around her despite her limitations. She discovers Gandhi's teachings and the principle of satyagraha, a form of non-violent protest against the colonists and the caste system.
