French literature originates in the Middle Ages, but is part of a continuous tradition. It draws inspiration from classical antiquity and stands alongside a still flourishing Latin literature, while making use of a then newly emerging language. From the first texts written in the 9th century, in a language that is no longer Latin and which developed into French or the langue d'oc, to the end of the 15th century, it spans a very long period. This literature reflects or shapes sensibilities, imaginations, and aesthetics, as well as values that are both very different from our own and to which we are sometimes heirs. This compact book attempts to provide sufficient information quickly and vividly, with a thoughtful and coherent account of the birth and development of this literature. It is intended to serve students of literature or history, as well as a broader audience interested in the early period of our literature. Through this book, it is hoped to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the works of the Middle Ages.
