Historical Diplomatic Mission of 1905
In 1905, President Teddy Roosevelt sent Secretary of War William Howard Taft on the largest diplomatic mission in American history. The journey took him through Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, China, and Korea. Roosevelt's daughter Alice, then 21 years old, acted as hostess for the delegation, which also included senators and congressmen. During this mission, secret agreements were concluded on behalf of Roosevelt.
Rediscovery in 2005
A hundred years later, James Bradley retraced Roosevelt's route and investigated what had happened in Honolulu, Tokyo, Manila, Beijing, and Seoul.
Consequences for America and Asia
Roosevelt was very confident in 1905 and believed that with these secret agreements he would strengthen America's influence in the Pacific. In reality, he thereby set off a chain reaction that would occupy America for a century.
