This edition of Euripides Hippolytos offers a carefully established text edition based on new collations of the medieval manuscripts, including two manuscripts not yet collated to date, and all known papyri. The text sheds light on the tragic death of an honorable young man, caused by his father, who wrongly believes that his son has seduced his new wife.
The extensive introduction includes an in-depth reassessment of the history of the text in antiquity, supported by evidence from the papyri, and presents a renewed understanding of the relationship between the medieval manuscripts. In addition, the earlier history of the legend and of two lost tragedies on the same theme is discussed in detail.
