Writer Rodrigo S.M. tells the moving story of Macabéa, a girl who experiences poverty and insecurity. She lives in a dilapidated boarding house in a slum of Rio de Janeiro, is threatened with dismissal by her boss, and dreams of a better life. Her fantasies about luxury creams from advertisements symbolize her desire for beauty and happiness. Macabéa experiences unrequited love and eventually ends up in a serious accident. The narrator holds her fate in his hands and confronts the reader with the question: will he let her live or not? What does the life of this insignificant girl mean?
