This study book examines the effectiveness of preventive psychological care within midwifery practices. It focuses on the emotional challenges parents experience during the transition to parenthood. Hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation, and new responsibilities can reactivate unprocessed emotions or traumas, causing stress and imbalance. In the Netherlands, preventive psychological care in maternity care is still limited, while early identification by midwives is crucial. Scientific research shows that parents’ mental health affects bonding with the child. Insecure attachment, which occurs in 30–40% of Dutch children up to the age of twelve, increases the risk of anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems. Preventive interventions during pregnancy and the postpartum period can reduce these risks and lead to lasting positive effects on well-being and social costs. This book is a valuable resource for professionals who want to strengthen psychological care within maternity care, thereby contributing to a healthy start for both parent and child.
