'My imagination always wanders to the wrong place.' This applies to Doyle Redmond, a 35-year-old writer without a steady job, who gets entangled in real trouble. He flees in his almost-ex-wife's Volvo back to his childhood place, West Table, Missouri, in the middle of the red Ozarks.
The police are looking for his brother Smoke because of a crime, and Doyle must convince him to surrender. But Smoke is in the hills with his partner Big Annie and her daughter Niagra (19) and is busy harvesting a profitable batch of homegrown marijuana.
Doyle gets involved in their plans and has to deal with the law and the Dollys, a notorious criminal family that has been feuding with the Redmonds for generations. They want a share of Smoke's profits, even if it means violence.
