Summary
In the early eighteenth century, Susan Barton is shipwrecked on a remote desert island. There she meets Cruso and his tongueless slave, Friday. As they live together on this remote desert island, she develops a special bond with Cruso. After their rescue from the far sea, only Susan returns to London, together with Friday.
Barton turns to the writer Daniel Foe to have her story recorded. But with Cruso dead and Friday silent, she struggles with the question of how her memories will be rendered. In this novel, Coetzee explores the power and temptation of storytelling in an elegant and gripping way.
