In his debut novel "Drüben!", the young illustrator and author Simon Schwartz recounts the difficult decision his parents made in the early 1980s to leave the GDR for good. This meant rebelling not only against the pervasive dictatorship of the workers' and farmers' state, but also, inevitably, against parts of their own families and backgrounds. From that moment on, their only son would grow up between two German states. Simon Schwartz weaves a significant chapter from recent German history into his personal story. This graphic novel was published to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Wall.
