Private investigator and World War II veteran Aloysius Archer travels to Los Angeles, the city of dreams and disappointments, and becomes entangled in a dangerous case.
It is late 1953 when Archer, together with his girlfriend, actress Liberty Callahan, wants to usher in the new year. Their evening is disrupted by Eleanor Lamb, a screenwriter in distress. After frightening events—mysterious phone calls, a blue car lurking, and a bloody knife in the sink—she asks Archer for help. Before he can officially start, a body is found in her house and Eleanor disappears.
Determined to uncover the truth, Archer begins an investigation with the help of Callahan and partner Willie Dash. From mafia-controlled Las Vegas to the glitter and glamour of Hollywood, he discovers that dark plans lurk behind beautiful masks. Corruption, danger, and murder lie in wait as he tracks down the kidnappers.
