Summary
David Lurie, a university lecturer in romantic poetry in Cape Town, becomes involved in an impulsive affair with a student. After the relationship leads to conflicts, he is called to account during an investigation. He admits his guilt but refuses to publicly express regret. He then resigns and retreats to his daughter Lucy's remote farm.
Despite the positive effect of rural life and his daughter's influence, the power dynamics in the country change drastically. David and Lucy become victims of a violent attack that tests their relationship.
