The Revenge of the Novel
After September 11, 2001, commentators were unanimous: the attacks would put an end to postmodernism. Thomas Vaessens, however, shows that within literature, postmodernism had already been under discussion for some time. In the late 1980s, people were already asking whether the tendency toward deconstruction had not been taken too far. Had it not become more difficult as a result to believe in the value of literary engagement?
This publication examines the renewed search for engagement among writers such as Frans Kellendonk, Arnon Grunberg, Joost Zwagerman, and Charlotte Mutsaers.
