Aurelius Augustine: Important figure in Christianity and philosophy

Aurelius Augustine (354-430 AD) was an influential thinker in the development of Western Christianity and philosophy. He was the son of a pagan father, Patricius of Tagaste, and his Christian mother Monnica. During his studies in rhetoric, he became entangled in philosophical and psychological doubts, which led to his involvement with Manichaeism. In 383, he moved to Rome and later to Milan to teach rhetoric. Through his study of Paul's letters and hearing Bishop Ambrose's sermons, he converted to Christianity in 386. Afterward, he returned to Tagaste, founded a religious community, and became bishop of Hippo in 395 or 396.

Confessiones: Autobiography and philosophical reflection

Confessiones, written around 397, is Augustine's spiritual autobiography. It describes his early life, family, and intellectual development, as well as his search for religious and theological truths. The work is structured as a prayer to God, with conscious attention to his readers. Confessiones combines a personal story with profound philosophical reflections and has a lasting influence.
