Content and context
This work contains Julius Caesar's own account of the first year of the Civil War between himself and Pompey. It is the only surviving classical account of such a conflict, written by a directly involved party. Although Caesar's style is clear and concise, his perspective remains tendentious, in which he presents his own and the motives, actions, and capabilities of his opponent in a colored manner. Dramatic elements play an important role in the selection and ordering of the events.
Learning objectives and use
The text provides Latin original texts with a Dutch translation side by side, supplemented with an extensive introduction and commentaries. This makes the material very suitable for studying Latin at an advanced level (C1-C2), for example in education or independent study.
Edition
The first edition appeared in 1991; the paperback was revised in 2003 and reissued with minor corrections.
