The book examines the Achaemenid Empire at its greatest extent under Darius I (r. 522–486 BCE), with territory stretching from the Indus Valley to southeastern Europe and from the western Himalayas to northeastern Africa. Waters analyzes historical sources, including Greek texts and archaeological evidence, from a Persian perspective. In addition, he places the Achaemenids in their historical context between their predecessors and successors, and discusses the interpretive challenges for historians.

About the author
Matt Waters is a professor of Classical Languages and Ancient History at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. He has also published on Neo-Elamite history and received various prestigious grants and academic distinctions, including the Jonas C. Greenfield Prize for his contribution to the study of the ancient Near East.
