About the book

This literary thriller, comparable to The Alienist and An Instance of the Fingerpost, is set in early 1800s England. At the center is a young Edgar Allan Poe, an American boy on the eve of mysteries and unexpected revelations.

Story

In 1819, two Americans arrive in London. Shortly thereafter, a bank collapses, a man is gruesomely mutilated on a construction site, and an heiress flirts with her social inferiors. Poe's schoolmaster tries to unravel the mystery before he and his loved ones perish. The truth springs not only from Europe, but also from a dark episode of corruption during the War of 1812 in the New World.

Settings and style

The story takes the reader from the coal-scented street scenes of late-Regency London to the winters of Gloucestershire. An Unpardonable Crime is a layered blend of literary crime, historical novel, and love story. The book offers new insights into Edgar Allan Poe and is a smooth and thrilling tale, interspersed with surprising twists.
