Berlin, 1940, and the city is filled with fear. In the house at Jablonskistrasse 55, the various residents try to survive under the Nazi regime in their own way: the bullying Hitler loyalists the Persickes, the retired judge Fromm, and the inconspicuous couple Otto and Anna Quangel. When the Quangels receive the news that their beloved son has been killed in France, they are jolted out of their quiet existence. They launch a silent campaign of resistance, which leads to a deadly game of cat and mouse between the Quangels and the ambitious Gestapo inspector Escherich.
