Introduction
How did Dutch originate from Indo-European? What was the role of contact with other languages, dialects, and group languages? And why do we learn in school that it is 'hij vindt' with t, but 'ik vind' with d?
About the book
15 Centuries of Dutch Language describes the development of Dutch through the centuries. Each chapter begins with an overview of the language contacts and societal changes in that period. It then explains how sounds, forms, word formation, and sentence structure were influenced by this. The book shows that Dutch has always been open to influences from outside. Migration and language contact are determining factors for language change.
