John Steinbeck's first major critical and commercial success, "Tortilla Flat," is also considered his funniest novel. The story revolves around Danny, a paisano, a descendant of the original Spanish settlers who arrived in Monterey, California, centuries ago. For Danny, friendship and camaraderie are more important than money and material possessions. When he suddenly inherits two houses, he doesn't hesitate to offer shelter to his fellow wanderers. Their love of freedom and disdain for material possessions lead them on daring and often hilarious adventures. Ultimately, however, Danny suddenly disappears, weary of his new responsibilities.
