With the book Tirocinium Graecum, we focus on teaching the Greek language, with the aim of promoting efficient and effective translation of Greek texts into Dutch. From the outset, the focus has been on Greek linguistic features, carefully avoiding brevity at the expense of gradual and thorough learning. The study of morphology and syntax is integrated, allowing students to encounter essential grammatical functions such as cases, prepositions, and constructions like accusatives cum infinitives and genetivus absolutus from an early age.
From the very first lessons, the teaching materials offer the opportunity to regularly translate Greek stories. These stories consist of continuous passages of text, largely adopted unchanged from Greek authors like Aesop. This facilitates the transition to reading authentic Greek authors.
Tirocinium Graecum clearly highlights the unique characteristics of the Greek verbal system and minimizes the disruptive influence of Latin grammar. This teaching method has the advantage that so-called "irregular tenses" are learned more organically, are repeated more frequently, and are therefore better remembered. The recognition and learning of individual (stem) tenses is crowned with the root tense list, which, with a few exceptions, serves as a summary of what has already been learned.
