A multifaceted and almost metaphysical portrait of Rome, where past and future constantly intersect: this city is the true protagonist of the collection. The nine stories, some of which exude a novelistic air, reveal a seemingly contradictory city that continually redefines itself. Generation after generation, Rome transforms into a hybrid entity, a dynamic mix of foreigners and Romans who feel unabatedly uprooted. Against the backdrop of an environment that can be both welcoming and hostile, the characters experience moments of revelation but also of profound instability. The story "Il confine" describes how a family spends vacation days in the beautiful countryside surrounding Rome, told from the perspective of the caretaker's daughter, a former flower seller in the city and the bearer of an old wound. In "Le feste di P.", a man remembers the lively evenings at the home of a friend who is no longer with us. "La scalinata" brings together six diverse characters around a neighborhood community in the center of Rome. "Nella Processione" follows a couple's unsuccessful search for solace for a tragic past. In "Dante Alighieri," the poet immerses herself in the life of an American woman who has moved to Italy, caught between memories of the past and the present. This writing style is reminiscent of twentieth-century Italian writers admired by Jhumpa Lahiri, such as Moravia, whose influence is evident in the title. However, the themes of this book—the fifth the author has written directly in Italian—are entirely her own: uprooting, alienation, the search for identity and home, the sense of alienation and loneliness that, in fact, awakens vitality and a fighting spirit.
