In 1677, Jean Racine wrote "Phèdre," his last great tragedy, in which he brings to life the mythical downfall of a misunderstood woman. This woman, marked by her heredity, is Phèdre, hopelessly in love with her stepson Hippolyte. When her husband, Thésée, returns, he wrongly condemns his own son to death. This tragedy depicts the poisoning of a woman who is both innocent and guilty, and exposes the irony that love can feel like a curse.
