In 1992, ten-year-old Gabriel lives in Burundi with his French father, an entrepreneur, his Rwandan mother, and his little sister, Ana. They live in a comfortable expat neighborhood. Gabriel spends most of his time with his group of friends, a cheerful bunch engaged in mischief. This quiet daily life and his carefree childhood are abruptly interrupted when the "small country" in Africa is hit hard by history. Gabriel watches with concern as his parents separate and the civil war approaches, followed by the tragedy in Rwanda. The neighborhood is thrown into chaos. The waves of violence invade their lives and change everything. Gabriel thought he was just a child, but discovers that he is mulatto, Tutsi, and French.
